In our office we can offer you a
whitening option with the following
advantages:
• It is faster: in about an hour you
will enjoy white teeth.
• You won’t need to place trays in your
mouth daily.
This system is ideal for busy people who
need immediate results without the
hassle of placing trays in their mouth
every day.
Is whitening an alternative for you?
Usually whitening is successful in 90 %
of the patients but it is not an option
for everybody. Whitening will work for
people whose teeth are dark due to age,
coffee, tea, or cigarettes.
When teeth have a dark yellow, orange or
brown color they will react better to
the whitening process. Teeth that show a
gray tone due to fluorosis, cigarettes
or antibiotics such as tetracycline will
get lighter, but the results won’t be so
dramatic.
How long does it last?
It depends on the patients habits such
as drinking coffee, tea, coke and
smoking, it is usual for this result to
last from one to five years, at this
point you can get a touch up.
How is whitening done?
There are two modalities for bleaching
your teeth:
1. At-home bleaching:
Impressions are taken and custom
trays are carefully fabricated to
closely adapt to the teeth. A
bleaching gel is applied to the
insides of the custom fitted trays
which are generally worn from 1-3
hours daily. The active ingredient
in most of the whitening agents is
carbamide peroxide, also known as
urea peroxide; when water contacts
this white crystal, the release of
hydrogen peroxide lightens the
teeth. Carbamide peroxide is
dispensed in varying concentrations
ranging from 10%-20%. There are also
hydrogen peroxide based at-home gel
that are dispensed in a dual barrel
dispenser which mixes and activates
the gel.
2. IN office Bleach:
In this technique the soft tissues
are protected, to allow us to apply
a whitening gel with a higher
concentration of 35% that will allow
us to do the process in a one-hour
period.
How long does it take?
The home bleaching process will take
from two to tree weeks, wearing the tray
for a one-hour period daily. The
in-office bleach will take a one-hour
appointment. Which system is the best
for you, is a personal preference
according to your life style.

Is bleaching a safe procedure? Could
I suffer any negative effect on my
teeth?
Several studies, during the past five
years, have proven bleaching to be safe
and effective. The American Dental
Association has granted its seal of
approval to some teeth bleaching
products. Some patients may experience
slight gum irritation or tooth
sensitivity, which will resolve when the
treatment ends.
How white can I expect my teeth to be
after the bleaching?
Nobody can predict how light your teeth
will be after the procedure. Each
patient is different but the usual
result will be to get your teeth two
shades lighter than the initial color,
when compared to the color guide dentist
use. Success will depend on the kind of
discoloration that you have and when
doing home bleaching it is very
importance the compliance of the patient
with the use of the tray. No bleaching
treatment will change the color of
porcelain, silicate or composite
fillings, they will have to be replace
to change color.
